Brief

To protect some 42 kms of coastline from a potential risk of sea level rise and coastal erosion the Kapiti Coast District Council is facilitating a community-led coastal adaptation programme. This project aims to inform, engage and consult with local iwi and community on the impacts of climate change and sea level rise and to develop shared solutions. A coastal summit was the first step in this process, and Wonderlab was asked to create an identity and build an online hub for all project information.

The project

Coastal adaptation – bridging polarised audiences and bring them together to consult.

The goal

Create an identity for the project, that can be applied to the summit as well as the ongoing work programme. A look and feel that is inclusive and non-threatening, that allows for the science as much as the community voice to be included.

The process

The Takutai Kāpiti identity needed to deliver a toolbox of elements, to last the project’s duration of several years. It needed to draw diverse audiences together and stand independent of the Council’s brand.

The outcome

We designed a people focused colour palette, slightly unexpected, but warm and welcoming. Two contrasting typefaces accompany each other to illustrate a diverse conversation, which is supported by a series of icons of recurring themes.
